BRICK & MASONRY REPAIR
Brick Repair in Roanoke, VA
Cracked, loose, or flaking brick can admit water, weaken surrounding mortar, and worsen as the masonry continues to move or weather. The right repair begins with understanding why the brick failed.

DIAGNOSIS BEFORE PATCHING
Brick Masonry Problems We Repair
Brick walls can deteriorate because of water exposure, freeze-and-thaw cycles, settlement, impact damage, aging mortar, or earlier repairs made with incompatible materials.
We evaluate the brick, mortar joints, and supporting structure to determine what is damaged and what may be causing it. If movement below the wall caused the damage, that condition may need to be stabilized before the brickwork is rebuilt.
- Cracks through individual bricks
- Stair-step cracks following mortar joints
- Loose, displaced, or missing bricks
- Flaking or crumbling brick faces
- Open mortar joints that admit water
- Sections that bow, lean, or separate
COMMON REPAIR NEEDS
Repair the Damage Without Ignoring the Cause
Cracked Brick Repair
A single cracked brick may reflect localized stress. Repeating stair-step cracks, wider openings, or cracks that return after patching can indicate movement below the wall.
Spalling Brick Repair
Moisture and freeze-thaw cycles can break apart the face of a brick. Badly deteriorated units may need replacement along with correction of the water-entry source.
Brick Wall Repair
Loose, displaced, or separated masonry may require selective rebuilding after the full wall and its support conditions have been evaluated.
SELECTIVE REPLACEMENT
Replace What Has Failed. Protect What Is Sound.
Selective brick replacement allows damaged units to be removed without rebuilding an entire sound wall.
The surrounding masonry is protected, deteriorated brick is taken out, and replacement units are installed with attention to size, color, texture, and joint appearance. When damage extends across a larger area, a partial rebuild may be more appropriate.
We inspect the full wall before deciding how much masonry should be removed—especially when cracks, displacement, or separation suggest that the visible damage is connected to movement elsewhere in the structure.
OLDER MASONRY
Brick Restoration for Older Homes
Older brick can be softer and more porous than modern masonry. A repair should respect the original material rather than overpower it.
Using mortar that is too hard or a cleaning method that is too aggressive can damage the brick the repair was meant to preserve. Work may include selective replacement, mortar-joint repair, removal of failed prior patches, and careful matching of brick and mortar appearance.

WHOLE-STRUCTURE EVALUATION
Repair the Cause, Not Only the Crack
Brick damage can begin in the masonry itself, but it can also be a visible symptom of foundation settlement, inadequate support, or ongoing water exposure.
Replacing cracked brick without addressing movement below it can leave the homeowner with the same crack in a newly repaired wall. Appalachian Foundation Services can evaluate the masonry alongside the foundation and supporting structure so the repair plan accounts for both.
